Reference in the text but not appeared as footnote

I try to add citation in a text, the reference appears correctly in the text, but it can't appear in the footnote column, and when I want to modify Word Document preference, the selection 'Display citation as footnote or endnote' is in gray scale color, which means that this could not be changed. Is there anything wrong with my Zotero or Word plug-in configuration?
  • you're likely using a numerical style (Vancouver, AMA etc.) to see the references, click "insert bibliography".
  • If I click insert bibliography in the text, it would insert the entire reference in the text....
  • Are you okay now, or is there still confusion?
  • I am still in the confusion....
  • The bibliography should be entered at the end or at the beginning of the document. Don't try to enter it at the position of a reference in the text; it will list every resource cited in the document, which is certainly not what you want.

As adamsmith says, a numeric style will not show anything but a number in the main text -- it's not a footnote number, but the number of an item in the bibliography. If you want a different style, select a different style via Document Preferences.
  • After checking closely every style, I see what you indicate as 'numeric style'. Some style are 'numeric', others are not. My next question is, does it mean that some very famous and frequently used citation style, for example, Modern Language Association, or American Sociological Association, exist only numeric form of style? Or there are numeric and non-numeric version for each citation style?
  • ASA and MLA aren't numeric - for those styles you'll get references in parentheses in the text:
(Smith 1776) for ASA, (Smith) for MLA. Again, you'll get the full reference in the bibliography. That's the only format these styles exist in both in Zotero and in the respective style guides.
  • Thanks a lot for all of your help ^^
