Upgrade Storageitalics in paragraph removed after inserting citations

I'm on Linux Mint 11, LibreOffice 3.3.4 (Ubuntu package 1:3.3.4-0ubuntu1), Zotero 3.0.3 via Firefox 1.0.
When I add a citation, all my italics (species names) in the receiving paragraph are reverted to normal font. Extremely annoying. Any ideas on a fix / workaround?
