Steps to Make Zotero Faster?

I'm writing a dissertation with Zotero and the OpenOffice plugin and like others here am having problems with the program's sluggishness.

I understand that Zotero is getting better and (hopefully) faster all the time, but right now, for those of us working with large databases, I'm interested in knowing whether people have figured out any strategies to make Zotero quicker. Any hints out there? Thanks!
  • do you mean make adding citations faster, or working in zotero (searching, sorting, etc) faster?
  • All of the above. The Openoffice plugin works very slowly. Adding citations is slow. Searching and sorting is slow.

I have about 500 items in Zotero, many with associated PDFs. Could the PDFs be slowing it down?

    Thanks!

I doubt attachments play any role in performance. As Dan has mentioned before (search forums please), one issue that does impact performance is that sorting happens in Javascript, rather than the database. This is not Zotero's fault.

As for the plug-in, see this other thread (which may or may not relate to your case). The problem is not specific to OOo, and happens in Word too. I submitted a comment to the Trac ticket on migrating off of VBA that this problem ought to be fixed as part of that move.
