Upgrade StorageWord 2008 crashing with Zotero

I looked on the forums for this issue. There are similar issues with Word 2008 but I can't find mine.
If I have Zotero running while I am using Word and I minimize either the Word or Firefox window, Word crashes (standard error message as others have reported). I know the solution would be "don't minimize them anymore" but sometimes I do and I'm wondering if there is a known solution to save this hassle.
I'm on a mac, using 10.5.8 OS, Word 12.3.1 Firefox 3.6.26 Zotero 2.1.10. I believe if I update Firefox, Zotero won't be compatible with Word (I've done that a couple times and downgraded).
I'm guessing my best option is to update word (I can get Office 2011) but I wanted to be sure there isn't already some solution to this so that I can save the time and money, or else to be sure this problem won't continue if I do switch. Any insight from the others out there is appreciated.
