Groups: Moving Entire Collections to a Group Library using the Updated Version of Zotero 3.0b3

Hi Dan,

Thank-you for your speedy reply this morning. I tried moving my collection of 488 articles from my library to my group library and ran into the error:177502019. I installed 3.0 Branch dev XPI and still ran into an error:893786459. It appears the program is unable to move a collection of 488 and requires breaking the collection up. I tried doing this yesterday and was able move 15-50 articles at a time successfully. I then need to periodically sync with the server to reduce the chances of the program crashing. I don't mind doing this however whenever I move any number of articles from my collection to a group library it immediately re-organizes my library into a different order. Since I labeled my study IDs with the original organization from my library, it is imperative that I sustain the integrity of that organization.

Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks again for your assistance with this!
  • There are no Zotero errors in there. What error are you getting, exactly?
  • This is one error I am getting:

Could not read chrome manifest file '/Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/extensions/{972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd}/chrome.manifest'.
  • At one point, it appeared that my entire library collection was copied over to my group library, which I was ecstatic over. This included two sub-collections instead of the one I was trying to copy over. However, I didn't care because the integrity of the organizational scheme was still intact. But when I tried to sync it I ran into an error and lost the entire collection.
  • That's the error in the error report, but what error are you seeing on screen that led you to report this?
  • Steps I am taking when trying to copy my sub-collection library into my group library:

    1. Open firefox on my mac.
    2. Open zotero application in bottom right corner and clicking toggle tab to open zotero in full window.
    3. Allowing zotero to sync before taking any actions.
    4. Clicking on my collection and dragging into my group library collection or sub-collection (tried creating a sub-collection within my group library to see if that made a difference).
    5. Receive the following error: A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.

    Script: chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/file.js:198
    6. Click continue hoping it may go through and wait.
    7. Receive the following error message again: A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.

    Script: chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/file.js:198
    8. Click stop script.
    9. Report error to zotero (different from before): [JavaScript Error: "uncaught exception: Error: Permission denied for <http://platform.twitter.com>; to get property Proxy.InstallTrigger"]

[JavaScript Error: "uncaught exception: Error: Permission denied for <http://platform.twitter.com>; to get property Proxy.InstallTrigger"]

[JavaScript Error: "uncaught exception: Error: Permission denied for <http://www.facebook.com>; to get property Proxy.InstallTrigger"]
  • OK I understand, I will say continue until it goes through. I'll keep you updated.

    Thank-you!
  • OK the entire collection went through eventually!! However, it still re-organizes my articles. I created sub-collections from my initial sub-collection breaking the articles down by library database (i.e. PsycINFO and Proquest), which will make it a little easier to locate articles. But I really need it to stay in the same order for ease of coding purposes.
  • I don't know what you mean by order.
  • As I collected articles from each library database it was added to my collection. I organized my articles by the date I collected each article. So I collected PsycINFO articles on 1/7, Proquest 12/6, etc.. I used this organizational scheme to assign IDs to each article (so I have 488 IDs). I was hoping to copy my collection to my group library while keep the same organizational scheme. However, as soon as I access my collection in the group library it immediately re-organizes them by title, etc... At this point, since I created sub-collections within my group library by library database, it will make it somewhat easier to access the next article that needs to be coded. However, if there is a way to transfer my collection while sustaining the organizational scheme, that would be ideal.
  • I still don't get it. I understand correctly that the collections are all there, yes? So you're issue is the order in which articles are displayed in the group library?

There is no way to arbitrarily order items in Zotero - they are always ordered by something, group or not. You didn't order them yourself in your own library, either (simply because there is no way to do that).
You can change what Zotero sorts by by clicking on the column header in the middle panel.
It sound like for your purposes you would want to sort by date added: You can add that column to the middle panel by clicking on the little table icon on the top right of the middle column.
  • Yes, I originally sorted by date added which was the organizational scheme I used to assign IDs. Since my entire library today was added the same day, it will not sustain that order. What I was hoping was to keep the same order when coping my library collection into the group collection. But it honestly sounds like that is not an option which I'm OK with because my entire collection is available in the group library.

Also, on a side note I wasn't able to sync the entire library because I ran out of storage. I don't mind upgrading storage, however I have 1000 plus articles in my trash. I am having a difficult time emptying my trash completely so I can finish syncing. I am searching the forums now for suggestions but figured asking while I was writing you here.

Ah, so you're saying the issue is that copying items to groups resets their Date Added/Date Modified times. We haven't really considered that. Unfortunately there are pros and cons to each approach.
I am having a difficult time emptying my trash completely so I can finish syncing.
Start new threads for separate issues.
  • I understand and that makes sense. I'm just happy I was able to copy my entire collection over to my group library so we start the coding process. Thank-you again for assistance with this!!

Also, I figured out the trash issue. Still syncing but it appears to be working out.
