How is it possible to append metadata to a PDF?

Hallo,

I want to publish a PDF and want anybody who uses it to cite it in the correct manner. Therefore I want to append metadata to a PDF, which include all necessary information, so if you click "Retrieve Metadata for PDF" in Zotero, a correct library entry will be created.

Thus I want to achieve the same thing papers in science direct etc. already have. That simply by retrieving the metadate a right library entry is created.

As far as I understand it, I must create a .xmp file, but unfortunately I have no idea how.

Thanks for the help in advance.
Best wishes
Daniel
  • You need publish your PDF to a website that Zotero can translate. This can be accomplished e.g. by using COinS on your website.

    http://www.zotero.org/support/dev/exposing_metadata/coins

Then you need to get a DOI for your article that points to this website and add that DOI on the front page of the article. Your university library may be able to help with DOI or you may be able to buy it.

Another option is to post the paper into an online repository that will provide a DOI. (
  • (While it's possible to attach metadata to a pdf, there is no standardized format for it. Zotero Retrieve Metadata doesn't even look at that data. Mendeley does, but prefers data from other sources).
  • You can also post it to a page and include the data Google uses for indexing in Google Scholar, and hope it shows up in their index: http://scholar.google.com/intl/en/scholar/inclusion.html

If it's in Google Scholar, Zotero's lookup should find it.
