Do I still have in-text citations?

I'm using Mac Word 2011 and Zotero 2.1.10. I have some documents in which I inserted in-text citations many versions ago (this document has been updated many times by two different users, Mac and PC versions of Word). The in-text citations no longer appear as "shaded" and I had assumed I had lost their Zotero citation properties (sorry, can't think of a better way to describe this). However, surprisingly when I hit the "Insert bibliography" button many still work. How do I turn the shading back on so I know which of my citations I need to insert and which are active?

There's a setting to "highlight fields" somewhere in the Word preferences (sorry this is vague, where exactly these things are changes all the time). It's independent of Zotero.

Check the top menu in Word

Word -> Preferences -> View -> Field shading
