Problem with APA 5th and 6th edition?

I am having issues with the formatting created by in text citations for APA 5th and 6th edition. The first initial of the author is being added to the in text citation even though there is only one author with the given last name. This seems to contradict APA style. Is there a simple way to fix this? I just updated the styles from the website and issue still persists.
