cannot save, or author goes in title on Amazon and Google books

I have just installed zotero today and I can't get it to work.
If I go to Amazon I can
a) capture details of a book correctly by entering the ISBN,
b) can partially capture them (but Author and Title and more are in the title) by clicking Create New Item from Current Page, but
c) can not capture at all by clicking Save to Zotero book icon on the location bar. If I'm on an Amazon search results page clicking the icon does come up with a list of the books but selecting some does nothing,
d) if I'm looking at one book rather than a list, clicking this icon (as c) does nothing. An box comes up in the bottom right but it is empty.
Google books is better but not working fully
a) same, works for ISBN
b) same, parial save
c) this works unlike Amazon. From a list I can save several books and even author is in the right place.
d) similar to Amazon but I get an error message in the box in th eright hand corner saying 'Cannot Save Item...check Known Translation Errors' but there is nothing in known errors that applies.
4,7,8,9, and 10 are relevant. Go through them in that order.

The relevant issue is what happens when you click the item in the URL bar.
  • Hi, thanks for your response. Doing step 4 clicking “Update now” makes the button display 'Error'. No clues as to what the error might be.
I did go on to try 8,9 and 10 none of which fixed the problem. NB after deleting the translators for 9 I wasn't getting any icon on the Amazon url bar so I deleted zotero and downloaded it again to get it back. Otherwise I think I followed the instructions.
  • correction ...I mean I went on to try 7 8 and 9 not 8 9 and 10.
This is the Amazon url I am using http://www.amazon.co.uk/Basics-Interior-Design-01-Retail/dp/2940411220/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1322767931&sr=1-1
  • Which Zotero version are you using?
Also, please provide the error report ID as requested under 10.
  • 2.1.10 I'll look up 10 again sorry
  • there is no report id as such
when on the Amazon page after clicking the icon (and the red box in the right hadn corner is blank) the Report Id... is grey, not clickable
did the same on the Google books page, where the box in bottom right does say there is an error, the Report Id... option is there so I clicked it and the box that comes up has this message

[JavaScript Error: "syntax error" {file: "http://books.google.co.uk/books?hl=en&lr=&id=-9Ja0ZQ6gSMC&oi=fnd&pg=PR5&dq=retail+management&ots=0FhY7ZuCd9&sig=7gZCfe4_burl0WpF2RbknHqRoMU" line: 1 column: 1 source: "No acceptable type available"}]

It said to click Next to send this error to zotaro developers but when I did it said 'invalid response from zotaro'
  • are you behind some unusually strong Firewall or so?
All of these errors - getting translator updates, sending error reports - that really doesn't make any sense and I've never seen this before. Which FF version are you using?
  • Theres nothing special about the firewall - AVG version 9.
I applied an update to FF today just before downloading zotero, its 8.0.1
Shal I try going back to an earlier FF?
  • "Update now" in the General pane of the preferences needs to not return an error. As long as it is, you're not getting translator updates. So you'll have to figure out what on your system is preventing that from working.
  • And no, Firefox 8.0.1 is not a problem.
  • I have disabled all plug-ins and while it still doesn't work I am now getting a different error message in the Report Errors... box which might mean something to you?
    It says
Could not read chrome manifest file 'C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\extensions\{972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd}\chrome.manifest'.
and in Windows explorer I find that path works as far as \extensions\ then there IS a {972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd}folder without a chrome.manifest under it, but there is also another folder in extensions with a similarly random name that does have a chrome.manifest file inside.
Could this be to do with the fact that I removed zotero then downloaded it again?? And somehow it has got confused? Just a guess.
  • Not, it's no problem to re-install Zotero.
It's more likely that your FF profile is completely shot -
you could try creating a new FF profile and installing Zotero there.

    Thanks that worked. Brilliant.
Should I delete the old profile?
  • well, it has all your old history, bookmarks, and other add-ons. If you care for any of this, it's relatively easy to move them to the new profile (it would be like moving your settings over to another computer - I've never done this, but there are instructions on the mozilla page and it's straightforward).

If you have nothing of importance in the old profile, yes, just delete it.
  • Will do. Thanks again.
