Linking to zotero attachments from other programs
Hi,
I've been looking at using Scrivener for the writing process of my dissertation, and I was hoping to get some advice on the best way to integrate it with my existing zotero library. My zotero library stores all of my research (including attachments), and syncs with zotero's servers. I'm thinking that what I would like to do is add items selectively from my zotero library into Scrivener (i.e. I'm not looking to replace zotero with Scrivener), and ideally I'd like to avoid duplicating my attachments in Scrivener. I would like to retain a single copy of each attachment (e.g. a pdf of a journal article), so when I add highlights or annotations I don't need to do so multiple times.
Looking through Scrivener, it appears that it would be possible to create a new research item for any article, etc., I wanted to include, and then under the reference section, to add an external link to a file that was located elsewhere on my hard drive. What I'd like to know is whether it would work if I were to link to the location of the attachment in my zotero folder- would this allow me to access the same document from both programs (obviously not simultaneously), and most importantly, would zotero's sync be OK with this? Or would zotero be disturbed by the attachment being opened and edited outside of the firefox/zotero client framework?
I'd really like to avoid corrupting my entire library as I set this all up, so any advice on best practices in this regard would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

You can even access the same file simultaneously from both programs - the second instance of that will likely be read only, but it will still open. The only thing to watch out for is that Scrivener should never re-name the file. While that won't corrupt Zotero's database, Zotero wouldn't be able to find the file anymore.
Simultaneous access/database corruption really is only a problem with the zotero.sqlite - since scrivener won't open/touch that anyway that's not a concern in your set-up.
