Stanford Encyclopedia still not working

There is a discussion on SEP below which is closed with the remark it should be working but it isn't as far as I can see. I am using Zotero standalone on a Mac with Safari and I tried with Firefox, neither of which works.

It comes up with the pop up in the lower right corner telling to check known translator issues, which I did, but none of the steps helped.

Any suggestions what to do here?
  • As noted in that thread, SEP is using metadata embedded in the site - not a dedicated translator. That should work - and does for me (I tried it on the entry on Plato). If it doesn't, please post an URL that doesn't work and an error report ID here.

That said, I've written a translator that takes advantage of the bibtex supplied by SEP on the "How to Cite this Entry" page - the data is better and will included the editor, edition, and correct item type (book chapter).
I haven't gotten around to submitting it, but I'd expect it to go out in the next week or two.

    doesn't seem to happen.

the reports say [JavScript Error: "'undefined' is not an object"]

I like the idea of the proper translator instead of the metadata, thumps up!
  • OK, try again, should work nicely now.
  • Unfortunately, it is still not working.

Chrome Version 29.0.1547.66 m, Zotero Connector, Zotero Standalone 4.0.11, Windows 7 Professional, Translator: Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy
  • that wasn't "still" - it had worked for a long time - it just broke because they changed the site (ever so slightly).
A translator fix is now up. Your version of Zotero will automatically update within 24hs, or you can update manually using the "Update Now" button in the "General" tab of the Zotero preferences.

  • I get the following error

"An error occurred while saving this item. Check Known Translator Issues for more information."

    Report ID: 1459901845
    URL: http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/language-thought/#StaLOT
    Zotero Connector 4.0.8.2
    OS: Ubuntu 14.04
    Chrome: Version 36.0.1985.97 beta

The error from the connector console looks like this:

[JavaScript Error: "Cannot read property '0' of null" {file: "eval at <anonymous> (chrome-extension://ekhagklcjbdpajgpjgmbionohlpdbjgc/inject/translate_inject.js:50:9), <anonymous>" line: 86}]
  • the problem is the #StaLOT, that trips the translator up. We'll fix it, but until then http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/language-thought/ works.
  • Thanks for the rapid response and workaround.

  • Hi guys, when I go on a page of the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy (SEP) and use Zotero connector, it saves something in Zotero, but when I click on it , it opens a link to the Stanford Enc page. This means I cannot make annotations and highlightings. Could you please tell me how to save a SEP page inside Zotero?

EDIT: Apologies for the rushed bump
  • When you say it saves "something" in Zotero, what is the "something"? You're following the instructions at https://www.zotero.org/support/adding_items_to_zotero#saving_webpages, yes?
  • Hi Gpatten, I saved now by right clicking on the zotero connector and then selecting "save webpage with snapshot" . However, when I click on the snapshot it opens the webpage outside of zotero, so I still can't highlight or take notes with Zotero. Any workaround?

On another note, now that I am using the right click procedure explained above, it is not saving the author's information, so if I have to put a reference I'd have to populate all the fields manually. Any workaround?
  • You want to open an html file with a pdf reader, whether Zotero's or anyone else's? Not an option, as far as I'm aware. Your only alternative here is going to be to print the snapshot to pdf and then save that to Zotero in place of the html file.

As far as your second problem is concerned, I can only suggest the cumbersome procedure of saving the page to Zotero twice and then shifting the downloaded file to the other entry.
  • I propose a feature request, i.e. to save the snapshot as a pdf so it can be annotated in Zotero!
  • Since your issue concerns the SEP directly, I assume you're aware of this: https://plato.stanford.edu/support/friends.html
  • I wasn't aware. That's really helpful as I would hardly download any webpages other than from SEP! Thanks
