Citations Disappeared, Bib in Field Code Format

Working with a student on a paper from Fall '10 from which all the citations disappeared (Chicago Manual of Style, Full Note with Bibliography). The end of the doc now shows all the Zotero citations in field coded format [ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM ...].
We've read the posts regarding toggling between Field Codes in Word. That's not solving the problem. What next?
She's on Word 2004, Firefox 3.6.23 and Zotero 2.1.10.
Thanks!
  • What does "not work" mean? They don't change at all? Can you tell if these are still actually Word fields? If somehow the fields got writtten into the file as regular text that's pretty much the end of it - I wouldn't know how to bring things back.
I've never seen this, but I would guess that messing with formats is the most likely reason - using bookmarks instead of fields and they got broken, using fields and saving as .rtf intermittently or something along those lines.
  • Toggling Field Codes in Word does not result in the citations displaying as formatted footnotes. In other words, nothing happens. I'd guess you're right -- the fields aren't really fields.
The student hadn't opened the paper in nearly a year, so I can't reconstruct what may have happened.
Citing in new documents or inserting new citations in the document in question does work.
I'll suggest she try and obtain a copy of her paper, as submitted to the professor, and go from there.
    Thanks for the likely explanation.
