Citing archive documents using MHRA

I need to be able to reference a whole series of Archive documents using MHRA . Footnotes need to follow this model:-
Archive, archive reference code, title, date, creator, page number
Example
Initial Footnote
Sheffield City Archives [hereafter, ‘SCA’], CA 295/C 1/1 Police Order Book, Vol. 3 (1856-1862), ‘Orders relating to Tenter St’, p. 56 (18th April 1858).

Subsequent footnotes for the same archive.

SCA CA 295/C 1/1, Police Order Book, Vol. 3 (1856-1862), ‘Claiming expenses’, p. 108 (1st June 1861).

I have been fiddling around with manually entering data in 'New Item/ document but can't get it to produce a footnote in Word in the manner required above . Can anybody help.
Thanks
  • This is going to be tough. First, Zotero does not yet support hereafter type abbreviations. People are working on it, but it's going to be a while before it's ready for prime time. ( http://citationstylist.org/2011/10/19/abbreviations-for-zotero-test-release/ if you're interested)

Then, putting the archive _before_ everything else seems odd - is this really MHRA required? Essentially, the whole citation is in reverse order of what I'd expect by usual MHRA or Chicago logic (Which would be something like:
'Orders to Tenter St', Police Order Book, Vol. 3, p. 56 (1856-1862), SCA, CA 295/C 1/1.
  • Thanks for your rapid response. Yes strictly speaking the MHRA Style Guide requires: Place,Archive , archive reference Two examples from MHRA style guide:-
London, British Library, MSCotton Caligula D III fol.15
Oxford, Bodleian library MS Bodley 277
so what I am required to do is a modification of that but still archive precedes. I can get round it by using the prefix/suffix and just input in the title section in my entry in my zotero library adding archive reference in the usual place ( it doesn't show up in the footnote but it means I can order the data at least for my purposes)
  • it depends on how many such references you have and if you're somewhat comfortable editing simple xml - if so, it would likely be possible to adjust MHRA according to your needs, or at least close to it.
    http://www.zotero.org/support/dev/citation_styles/style_editing_step-by-step
    might help.
Otherwise yes, you'll likely be best of dealing with this in prefixes
  • I have found that the quickest way is to enter the dat re the source in the normal way in document/manuscript then using the footneote editor to shift the data re archive location /document refernce to the front from the back is pretty quick so as the thought of editing xml concerns me I think I will stick with that. Thanks for the advice.

I have another problem with MHRA/ Zotero in the generation of the bibliography. Zotero does that more or less correctly except that the formatting is a little strange. When an entry in the bibliography exceeds a line , the second and any subsequent lines in the entry are indented but by the equivalent of 7 spaces where the norm is 1 space. Using the edit function in the Word plugin doesn't allow me the change that. Also occurs if I generate a bibliography using Chicago or Harvard. Is this a function of Zotero or of Word? Any workaround suggestions would be welcome.
    Zotero 2.1.10 ,Firefox 7.01 Word 2010 Plugin for 2.1
    Thanks

I have found that the same thing happens with Chicago.
  • Indenting is controlled by the Word style for the bibliography, which you cna adjust.
    This applies:

If by "footnote editor" you mean the "show editor" in the plugin - yes, that will work, but do take the warning displayed seriously - e.g. citations modified this way won't, I believe, turn into ibid if you insert the same citation before etc.
