Create separate error message for failing DOI translator

A lot of reported translator errors are, in fact, just DOIs that aren't registered. See here for a recent example:

If possible, it would be great if we could have a separate error message for this, along the lines of
"The DOI: 10.xxxx is not registered with CrossRef. See here for more information"
  • I agree. That would be a useful error message.

I would add that the error comment for the "see here" text should indicate the possibility that the journal publisher has not yet submitted the doi linking data to the doi Foundation. I have noticed that, for some publishers, their article metadata feeds to online bibliographic database services can be days or weeks ahead of their sending article linking data to the doi Foundation registry.

I don't know how often CrossRef grabs updated data from the doi registry; but I suspect that the problem is upstream with the publisher rather than with the doi registry or with CrossRef.
  • Are CrossRef and the DOI Foundation parts of the same entity?
