Upgrade StorageConfused about PDF storage & synching

I have my own sync set up (using a NAS drive and webdav). On my pc, I store my PDF files. I'm not clear how they are stored/linked to for zotero. Are they stored within zotero or merely linked to on my pc in relation to syncing on other machines?
For example, I sync with zotero on my laptop. Will copies of the pdfs be saved locally on my laptop hardrive? (I'm thinking about it pdfs filling up my small laptop hard-drive). Or can it be set up that they are only downloaded temporarily on the laptop and then automatically re-synced (e.g. I were marking up pdfs on my laptop).

The copies will be saved both locally and on the NAS.
