Citation style: What to do when the style is not in Zotero?
Dear all,
I am new to this manager of references. So far it appears intuitive and like a great tool for writing my master's thesis.
I have bumped in to a problem: I need to reference in a style unlike any I can find in Zotero (used at the Department of Sociology at the University of Copenhagen). It is closest to the Harvard Reference Style found in American Sociological Association, but it differs on a few accounts.
I read that it was possible to make a style yourself, but the external page I could not figure out at all.
Therefore I hope that someone more experinced than I will be able to help me make this style. Or will be able to send me a similar code + guidelines as to how I edit a code and get the results in to Zotero afterwards so that I can use the changed style here.
I have tried translating the guidelines for the citation style here (in case you speak Danish they are also found here: http://sociologi.ku.dk/dokumenter/samlemappe_eksamen/Generel_eksamensvejledning_-_dansk_-_version_juni_2011.pdf/):
REFERENCES
References in the text should appear as such: text text text (Smith 2004:22-23) text text more text (Jones 2001:11; Tilly & Peirce 2002:30-34; Smith et al. 2003:19)
The surname(s) must be followed by the year the title was published and the number of the page(s). If there are two authors the first author's surname must be followed by the second author's surname with a "&" between them. If there are three or more authors the name of the first author must be followed by "et al.". the different publications cited must be separated by the marker ";".
If the same author has to publications in one year that you cite the first must be written as such (Smith 2000a:21-22) and the second as such (Smith 2000b:40-45). the same applies in the bibliopgraphy where the first publication should be called "a" after the year and the second should be called "b" after the year.

Bibliography must include an alphabetically sorted list (after surname).
References must be cited as such:
a. The first author must be written by surname, then by first name(s): Jones, Martin. The following authors of this title must be written their full name (first name(s), surname: Martin Jones)
b. The order of information in the bibliography is as follows: Surname, firstname(s), editors (only if the authors are the eds. of the title), year, title (books in italics, citation marks "" when contributions to/article in a book with multiple authors or a journal (in this case the title of the book in italics or the name of the journal in italics, accordingly), printing place, publisher (the two last separated by a ":").
c. Write "in" before the name of the title with multiple contributors and one or more editors + "(ed.)" or "(eds.)"
Different types of titles/sources written differently in the bibliography:
1. Books:
The title of the book must be written in italics. after the title the palce where it was printed is written and the publisher
Fx:
Smith, Eric & Diane Andersen 2000: Methods for sociologists. Copenhagen: Sage.
2. Articles from journals:
The title of the article must be written in italics. Number and volume must be written using numbers (refrain from using "vol"), separated from the name of the journal by a comma.
Fx:
Jones, Charlotte 1990: ”Using meta-analysis in social research". Journal of Medical Sociology, 5, nr. 4: 56-70.
3. Articles in anthologies:
Combines the guidelines for articles with those of books. The book must be written in italics, while the title of the article must be in quotation marks "".
Fx:
Anderson, Marie 1990: ”Norms”, in Jameson, Peter et al. (eds.): Changing norms. London: Rourke Publishers: 91-124.
4. Rapports:
If the report is not written by a person, but an institution or a govenmental institution this institution must be cited as author. The title of the report must be written in italics.
Fx:
Ministry of Social Affairs 1998: Social Psychiatry. Project Oslo. Copenhagen: Ministry of Social Affairs
5. Conference papers:
Fx:
Bourdieu, Pierre 1999: “The Craft of Danish Sociology”. Paper to the conference: “Strategies and Perspectives”, The Danish Sociological Association, Copenhagen, December 25-26.
6. Newpapers, magazines and such:
If it is an editorial the paper's name is cited as the author.
Fx:
New York Times 1997: ”Spring in the Suburbs”. Editorial, d. 6. februar: 5-6
if it is an article with an author (or a debate article) in the paper the author's name must be followed by year, title, date in qutation marks, number of the page:
Fx
Kuperman, Sofia 1997: ”I was not born in Denmark, but I belong in Denmark”. Information, d. 19. april: 9
7. Documents from the Internet:
Cited as exact URL + the date of the visit to the page
Fx.
http://forums.zotero.org/post/category/11/, 22. september 2011
I will appreciate any help possible as I am stuck.
Thank you.
Best regards,
Sofie
P.S. (in case it is needed for the above) The months in Danish are: januar, februar, marts, april, maj, juni, juli, august, september, oktober, november, december.
P.P.S. I appologize for this extremely long question.
please list the differences with ASA
Thank you for replying this swift.
The differences with ASA (http://lib.trinity.edu/research/citing/asa%20style%20citations.pdf) are:
BIBLIOGRAPHY
1) If possible it should occur in Danish (the other style for some reason already does this, but if you need any details, I'll make a list of the relevant translations).
2) For all the different types of citations the "." should be a ":" after the year.
3) The use of citation marks and italics follow that of the ASA in all the different types of sources.
4) Chapter in a book is this in ASA: "Author Last, First. Year of Pub. "Title of Chapter/Article." Pp. inclusive page numbers in title, edited by First Initial. Middle Initial. Last Name. City, State. Abb./Country of Publisher: Publisher."
--> in the style I am requesting it should be "Author Last, First. Year of Pub. "Title of Chapter/Article.", i First Initial. Middle Initial. Last Name (red.). City, State Abb./Country of Publisher: Publisher: Pp. inclusive page numbers in title." (please note that it should not say "in", but "i" before the book the article is printed in) ((red.) means "edited by" and should appear after the name of the author(s) who edited the book).
5) Journal article Print appears in the ASA style as "Author Last, First. Year of Pub. "Title." Journal Name volume #(issue #):
inclusive page numbers."
--> instead it should be like this in the style I am requesting: "Author Last, First. Year of Pub. "Title." Journal Name volume #, nr. issue #: inclusive page numbers."
6) For all three newspaper sources the ASA style adds "p." before the numbers of pages. There should only be numbers in the style that I am requesting (like the page numbers in the other sources are written (without the "p." in fron of them).
7)Concerning all Internet sources treated as Internet sources they should appear as "besøgt" instead of "Retrieved" and in the form: 22. september 2011 "'complete URL', besøgt date'.' month year".
8) Book, one author, Book, two or more authors, Electronic book, Multi-Volume Works, Multi-Page Internet site, Homepage, : The same as the ASA style (a part from the "." being ":" after year)
1) Concerning single authors the style follows ASA
2) Concerning two authors the style differs a bit from ASA seing that ASA writes "(Johnson and Smith 1995:34)" and in the style I am requsting the "and" should be replaced by a "&": "(Johnson & Smith 1995:34)"
3) If there are three or more authors they should be written like this in the style I am requesting: "(Johnson et al. 2000:55)" (the ASA style writes up until three authors before using et al., our style writes up until two authors before using et al.)
4) if multiple sources are cited in the same place, they follow the ASA guidelines (separating them by a ";").
5) Concerning Internet cites: they should appear as such in the text "One could argue that this is the case (http://forums.zotero.org/post/, besøgt 22. september 2011)." (in the form: complete URL "," besøgt date "." month year)
If there is anything more I can do to make this approachable please write a comment to this post.
Regards,
Sofie
Thank you.
P.S. A perhaps unrelated question is: Is it possible to get Zotero to write only the year and the number of page in the few cases when one uses the author's name in the text? "...Welch contends that this is not the case (1991:34)." or is this only possible manually before completion of the text one is writing?
It is above my current skills to answer the other question, but I would find a solution to this very handy as well.
Best regards,
Ask
Thank you many times. I really appreciate it.
and
Dear Ask
Thank you for the good and handy advice.

Sofie
Did you ever manage to get hold of the citation style you wished for?
