Double-entries when inserting a citation

I'm using:

Zotero Connector for Chrome - Version: 2.999.1
Zotero for Firefox 2.1.9r10289
And the latest plugin for Word.

When using the Firefox version, I have no problems.

When using Chrome (etc), I sometimes have a problem when inserting citations; when inserting (using the red-box) what should be a unique citation from my library, I get offered two choices of the same item. There is only one item in my library -- e.g. Brint. Zotero seems to treat the two different ones as being entirely different. If I pick the 'wrong one' when I've already used the item, then I get an a and a b item -- such as (Brint, 1994a) and (Brint, 1994b) ... I'm an APA type of a guy.

Most odd. Doesn't always happen, but I guess its happening about 25% of time at the moment.

When I show the embedded field in all it's glory (Shift-F9), then the fields do seem to point to different items.

Most odd.

Regards
Peter
  • first, you're using a very odd version of Zotero. I.e. you're using a development/branch version of Zotero, but one that hasn't been update for three weeks or so. That's a very bad idea. If you don't want to use a dev version, install Zotero 2.1.10 from the website. If you do (which really should be for testing and troubleshooting only), update to the most recent version (something like 2.1.10r10549).

    Then, I'm not clear about your set-up. Are you using Zotero standalone or not? The Chrome connector has nothing to do with the word integration. The other thing is - are you sure these items are actually unique? Have you checked in your library?
  • Hello Adam,

    I don't know why I'm using an odd version for FF. I just tend to upgrade when FF reminds me.

    I alternate between Zotero Standalone and FF (for reasons to do with Chrome and FF). I close word in between switches so it should be relatively clean.

    The item I mentioned, and others I've checked are definitely not there. Have a look at my Library on the Zotero site for Brint ... there is only one there too.
  • Okay, just done a fresh start ... had Zotero SA reinstall the Word Integration.

    I inserted Brint into a new document. Again, I get two choices of identical looking entries. But, this is the Word field for the first one:

    { ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"1jf59psrif","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Brint, 1994a)","plainCitation":"(Brint, 1994a)"},"citationItems":[{"id":1271,"uris":["http://zotero.org/groups/10964/items/KNHHFGBK"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/groups/10964/items/KNHHFGBK"]}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"} }

    And this is the Word field for the second:

    { ADDIN ZOTERO_ITEM CSL_CITATION {"citationID":"1gdc5r1792","properties":{"formattedCitation":"(Brint, 1994b)","plainCitation":"(Brint, 1994b)"},"citationItems":[{"id":9627,"uris":["http://zotero.org/users/3276/items/G5RHZR4R","http://zotero.org/groups/10964/items/KNHHFGBK"],"uri":["http://zotero.org/users/3276/items/G5RHZR4R","http://zotero.org/groups/10964/items/KNHHFGBK"],"itemData":{"id":9627,"type":"book","title":"In an age of experts: The changing role of professionals in politics and public life","publisher":"Princeton University Press","publisher-place":"Princeton, NJ","event-place":"Princeton, NJ","call-number":"301.4440973 B85","author":[{"family":"Brint","given":"Steven G"}],"issued":{"date-parts":[[1994]]}}}],"schema":"https://github.com/citation-style-language/schema/raw/master/csl-citation.json"}}

    You can see the 1994a and 1994b versions. Now I'm guessing that one of these has been pulled from my Zotero group ... and one is from my Library. But why is it happening that way?
  • I think working with the Standalone - which is essentially the 3.0 version - and the 2.1 version of Zotero together might not work. The SA embedds metadata in the citation - as you can see - the 2.1 version doesn't. If you're going to be working with the SA anyway I would just recommend using the 3.0b for Firefox, too. See if that makes a difference.
  • The example is from a new document only using standalone Zotero.

    To me it looks like you're inserting the 1994a from the group and the 1994b from your library - that would still be two different items for Zotero purposes - thought that's in the process of being addressed.
    But maybe Simon has something more precise to say.
  • That I can understand ... but how can I stop it or distinguish between them?
