Zotero not picking up switch from MLA to Chicago

I have an essay with MLA citations (author, year, page in parentheses). I told Zotero to choose Chicago instead because the journal wants the paper in Chicago (full notes/biblio). Well, it switched to Chicago but it is putting the citations at the end of the sentences (replacing the previous MLA citation) and not in end notes at the end of the paper. Why is it doing this and how do I get it to move the citations to endnotes? I have gone the other direction with a paper (Chicago to MLA) and Zotero never skipped a beat.

    If I understand correctly that should certainly work. Could you please
    1. Try this in a fresh document with just one or two citations
    2. take a screenshot and post it to afree image hosting cite like imageshack.us
    3. Describe your set-up - which Zotero version, Word Processor, plugin version.

    As a possible explanation - if you're using Bookmarks in OpenOffice (or Ooo derivatives) this won't work, because they don't work for footnotes.
