Reset numbering for thesis chapters

It would be great if there was a way to reset the citation numbering for each chapter of a thesis.

I know adamsmith has been suggesting that people write chapters separately and then paste them altogether, but it's annoying to have to re-join documents every time I need to change one reference.

Also, I had already joined my chapters to create a table of contents and to be able to reference tables/figures by their respective section/chapter numbers before I found out I can't do this with zotero citations. Now I essentially have to disassemble my intricately connected chapters...
  • The actual numbering is not controlled by Zotero in footnote styles, so you should be able to reset it using the typical numbering control mechanisms in Libre/OpenOffice or Word. For numeric styles, there is no way to reset numbering, but there you could only reset numbering if you had chapter-specific bibliographies, which are outside of Zotero's current capabilities.
  • Hi ajlyon,
    Thanks for your reply.

For people who have this problem in the future, I solved this by creating a Master Document (in Microsoft Word). Once I insert all the documents into one master document, I can update all the table/figure/ToC fields to match their respective chapters (Ctrl-A, then F9). Because Zotero doesn't have master bibliography support, the numbering for the individual chapters won't change. I can still edit the individual chapters and then just update the master document.
  • I'm glad this works, but note that no one has tested what happens when you use Zotero in chapters attached to a Master Document. It may very well work just fine, but you should be aware that you're in uncharted waters.
