Help working from two computers and also duplication

I have duplicates appearing in my zotero library
I have been trying to work from two locations, and think that some did not sync in one location. I then made further changes from the second (primary) location. The two libraries appear to be different after syncing. Additionally the server sync produces multiple copies (2, 4, 7, and more)of references. I have been trying to delete them but this gets very time consuming (days) and I have to open each entry to see which have the most up to date attachments. Need advice desparately.
I had automatic syncing from both computers.
I will turn syncing off on one computer (A) and hope to get the library system working well on the other one (B). Should I then delete local library and update on computer (A) to get all entries from (B) which i will continue to sync to the server? Will this work?

How do I stop the mulitplication of references happening?
  • Syncing does not create duplicates. The only way to get duplicates is by using export and import or upgrading separate Zotero 1.0 libraries on multiple computers and syncing those.

You can use the reset options to overwrite data on one machine from that of another.

  • Hi Dan!
Okay have a couple more questions
    when you say
"upgrading separate Zotero 1.0 libraries" what do you mean?
I have 2.1.9 zotero on a home computer and on a university computer.
The changes I made whilst working at the university computer did not show after syncing. So I continued editing at home. I have been eliminating duplicates. (long task is there any way to see the attachments without having to click on each reference?)
I went into the university computer today and the new folder/collection i made as a test now appears on the home computer access.
However, while i was at the university, I noticed that having eliminated all the duplicates up to the letter s, that in fact there were now many duplicates from a - s (2 of each?).
I have checked now on the home computer and see that these new duplicates have appeared after syncing (i think with the zotero server).

So I did not actually import or export at the university computer, so a bit confused as to why is has again created duplicates.
form s - a there are many more duplicates.

    Thankyou in advance.

If a library was created with Zotero 1.0 and you're upgrading it repeatedly to Zotero 2.0+ format and syncing instead of using the upgraded version the next time. You'd be clicking through an upgrade wizard if that was the case.

I don't really know what you're doing, but you're almost certainly doing something wrong if you're getting duplicates.
  • Hi Dan
I just click on zotero and open it from Mozilla browser at both ends. is it possible that i have two different versions and by opening each this causes duplicates?

Also do you happen to know if there is a way of eliminating duplicates?
    or
is there a way of viewing all attachments without having to click on each entry to open and see attachments?

    Your help most appreciated
  • The only version difference that would produce duplicates would be going from Zotero 1.0 to Zotero 2.0 or later, and you would see a database upgrade wizard when it upgraded the database.

Zotero 3.0, now in beta, offers duplicate detection and merging.
