webDAV sync with myDrive suddenly not working

After using Zotero for a long time with no major problems, I'm suddenly unable to sync properly these last few days.
I'm using http://webdav.mydrive.ch/zotero as my repository.
I can access that webdav account through "My Network Places" without difficulty, so I don't think it's a server-side problem.

When I try to verify my webDAV server, I get the following error:
"An unknown error occurred. Please check your file sync settings or contact your server administrator."
It does this regardless of whether the password is correct. It also doesn't work with https:, but then it never did work with https.
I've restarted my computer but it makes no difference...
There is nothing of interest in the "Report Errors" log, only some yahoo-related items.

Any idea?

Nothing changed spontaneously in Zotero, so it's clearly a server issue or an issue with your computer/network.

Provide a Debug ID for the verification attempt and we can tell you the specific error message you're getting, but we can't help you beyond that.
  • Debug ID is
    D1106183895
  • MyDrive is returning a 409 Conflict. It does this when you hit a certain number of files.

  • OK, I have read that other forum carefully, and I have tried to solve the problem myself, but I am stuck.
I made a note of the folder name of a library item that I did not need, deleted it from zotero, then manually deleted it from mydrive.
Then I re-verified the server and clicked sync again.
But the sync failed after it added new items and the total number of files went to 1002 (the limit is 1000).
Can I just delete a bunch of random items from the webdav server and re-sync?
I'm willing to delete unused library items and stick within the 500-item library limit until I find a new webDAV server, but right now I need to get sync working again.
    What should I do?
  • Can I just delete a bunch of random items from the webdav server and re-sync?
If you like. Zotero won't reupload them unless you reset the file sync history (or something causes that to happen).
  • OK, I got sync working after manually deleting enough items from the webDAV server that it could upload my new library items.
From now on I'll have to keep my library to under 500 items by deleting obsolete items as I go.
    My questions are:
    1. Can I just delete the attachments associated with obsolete items while keeping the record itself?
    2. How do I make sure Zotero deletes old items from the webDAV repository? I saw some forum remarks about "Purge deleted storage files" and "Purge orphan storage files", but I don't see any such button. At the moment my webDAV storage folder has many more files in it than my local storage folder.
    Thanks for your help!
  • 1) Yes, though they won't be deleted from WebDAV automatically.

    2) Purging is automatic, but it may be broken in 2.1. We'll make sure it works for 3.0 Final.
