How do I add a citation?!

Long time user of Zotero (currently on 2.1.8). Downloaded standalone to kick the tires and the 1st question I have is: how do I get a citation into it?!?! (Do I have to update the Zotero for firefox too? and that's the mechanism for it? (or use chrome/safari I suppose).
