Style Request: Zootaxa

I can't seem to find a custom style for Zootaxa. It may be that they use an existing citation style with another name, but their website (http://www.mapress.com/zootaxa/support/author.html#Preparation of manuscripts) gives citation examples without a style name. it's similar to harvard style, but not exactly. any suggestions? I'm hoping the style exists under another name.
  • I don't think that exists.
    See here for requests:
    http://www.zotero.org/support/requesting_styles
maybe try starting with the Imperial College Medicine style.
  • Similar style:
    - zootaxa.ens (http://www.mapress.com/zootaxa/support/Zootaxa.ens)
    - ecology.csl

    Differences from similar style:
    - Zootaxa.ens has issues importing to .csl in that the in-text citations are missing parantheses, the semicolon delimeter is missing between sources when multiple sources are selected, and normal spaces and punctuation are missing throughout the in-text references and bibliography. All the problems seem to be minor punctuation/delimeter problems but they render the ens import useless because it makes fields into continuous strings. Also, the ens does not work with version 2.1 and gives a "this.style is undefined" error (http://forums.zotero.org/discussion/17678?page=1#Item_27)
    - Ecology.csl has identical in-text citations as far as I can tell. The order of fields is generally the same between Ecology and the Zootaxa guidelines, but differs in formatting such as that Ecology does not italicize journal names and does not include parantheses around the publication year. In some tests, Ecology also lacked number of pages for books. Book citations also lack an italicized title. This also was the case with Book chapters which also differed in formatting of editors, instead of "In: Smith, A, Smith, B. & Smith, C. (Eds)," Ecology has: "in: A. Smith, B. Smith, & C. Smith, editors,". Website bibliography entries differ in Ecology in that they say "Retrieved from" and do not give the access date, whereas Zootaxa say "Accessed from: [URL] ([Date of Access])".

    - Note that zootaxa does not specify a citation format for computer programs, so please repeat the style for internet resources to be used for computer programs. This seems to be how most authors treat computer programs in various instances in manuscripts.
    - It is unclear how Zootaxa deals with personal communication citations (i.e. interview) and I have not had any response from journal editors on the matter.
  • will be a couple of days.
  • Sorry, but the two styles aren't particularly similar and your list of references isn't remotely complete (e.g. Ecology doesn't have the year in parentheses, it does display DOIs for all articles, it uses and as text rather then the ampersand (&) and I'm sure there is a lot more.)
Unfortunately I don'thhave the time to compile these differences.
If you want me to code you the style you'll need to put more effort into this. The ideal way is to list an example of a reference for each item type and list all the differences between the two.
  • - I thought it would be easiest to compile the new .csl from the .ens which is only having issues with punctuation. Is this not the case?
    - The Zootaxa style is a blend of many different styles, Ecology is only one of the similar ones and was most similar in the references I was using (which apparently didn't have DOIs). What characteristics are most important to have between styles? Punctuation? Format (italicization, caps, etc)? Citation structure (order of authors, title, etc)?
  • no, we can't (mainly for legal, but also for practical reasons) reverse engineer endnote styles, sorry for the misunderstanding.
Most important is the citation structure. Least important is formatting like italics or caps.
