Data fields already filled when manually adding new item

If I add a "Newspaper Article" via the "New Item" button a new record is created in the library (centre pane) but the data fields (over in the right hand pane) are filled in with data from the previous record in the library. This happens even though the empty record is highlighted in blue in the library pane. If I click on another library item and then back to the empty record the data will disappear. Sometimes the data that turns up in the new record is from a library record that was previously viewed. It looks like some sort of odd caching problem?
