Do I need to update Zotero? How?

I am having some trouble with the Word plugin. Inserting a citation sometimes works, but sometimes doesn't, and I had some trouble inserting a bibliography...after 3 tries, it finally inserted it but I don't know what I was doing wrong.

Thought I should make sure I had the latest update...how can I tell if I do? I don't see a "check for updates" link.

(Sorry for starting a new discussion...I'm sure this has been answered before, and I tried searching, but was just overwhelmed having to sift through all those entries)

    you don't say which Zotero version you have - but if you have the FF add-on (and not the standalone version) - it, like all FF add-ons - automatically checks for updates and prompts you to install them. The most recent version is 2.1.8.
    You can also manually check for updates in the add-ons menu of Firefox.
    The problem with Word is unlikely to be related to this, but it's impossible to tell without more details.

    Okay, I found the place to manually update it in Firefox. It said I had version 2.1.1, so I told it to update to 2.1.8. (at least I hope I did it right). It said the Word plug-in needed to be updated too, so I did that. I'm hoping this will fix my Word problem. If not, I'll post another question!

    I'm afraid that I occasionally tell it to skip the updates, if I'm busy working on something right then or about to go to bed (just paranoid about it causing problems I guess). I didn't realize it had gotten so far behind though--apparently if it asks me once, it doesn't reprompt me again the next day. So I will try to remember that and do my updates right when it asks.

    as a general rule, small updates - i.e. version numbers after the second point (say from 2.1.1 to 2.1.2)- are highly, highly unlikely to cause any problems and are easy to roll back in the rare case when they do.
    You're right to be careful to upgrade in the middle of a project, so for major upgrades - e.g. 2.1 to 2.2 or 2.1 to 3.0 (whatever the devs are going to chose) it makes sense to wait until you're at a point where some intermittent issues won't cause you a nervous breakdown before you upgrade.
