Removing parentheses from in-text citations

I have just moved (or am trying to move) to Zotero from Endnote.

My main problem is: I frequently want to write inside citation parentheses - eg "(see Figure 1 in Smith et al. 2000)" or "(Soandso 2000, Soandso et al. 2001, and see section 3 in Soandso 2002)" or "(e.g., Species X: Smith 2000; Species Y: Smith 2001)

I can't seem to edit the Zotero styles to allow me to cite without parentheses, as I used to do in Endnote just by deleting them from the style template. Is there a way to do this? I can see that several other people have asked this question, but I can't find any answer to it, so I guess it is not possible. Could this be incorporated into Zotero somehow, as it would seem a pretty useful feature? Someone suggested, for example, a check box for 'remove parentheses' in the same way we can 'remove author'. In Endnote I used to edit each style and save as a new style lacking citation parentheses... it would be great if this were possible in Zotero (if it is, and I am just missing how, please let me know! I have tried editing a Zotero style but can't quite see how to get rid of the parentheses)

Welcome to Zotero! The way to do this is to use the "prefix" field in the add/edit citation box for what you want to write before it (and suffix field if you want to put something behind it). In case of multiple citations ("multiple sources" in the Zotero Word plugin parlance), you can specify a prefix/suffix for every individual citation.

(The reason Zotero does not give you the option to cite without parentheses is that if you enable that, it becomes a lot more difficult to switch citation styles and still be sure everything looks reasonable.)
  • Great! I tried that and it works. Thanks very much!
