Notes not listed under children?

Trying to access my notes via the API. I see on an item's page there's e.g. 5 items, of which 4 are notes, but when I try to access the children of the item, only 1 shows, and it's an attachment.

All the children of the item should be listed here ... why are only itemTypes of "attachment" showing? How do I access a particular item's notes?
