Zotero office suite integration for Firefox 5 and 6?

As of right now, it seems that the Zotero OpenOffice Integration 3.5a1 plugin does not work for me when running Zotero 2.1.8 in Firefox 5 on Mac OS X 10.6.7.

1. Will there be a new version of office suite integration plugins released soon for Firefox 5?
2. And will the plugin just work in Firefox 6 and/or 7 when it is released (and does 32 vs 64 bit matter)? Or are the behind the scenes changes in Firefox so great that the plugin needs to be reworked during each new Firefox point release?
3. Will the plugin continue to be called the "OpenOffice" integration plugin, or will it be renamed LibreOffice?
4. Finally, and just out of curiosity, is the plugin multi-platform, or do separate versions of it need to be made for each OS?

Zotero has worked wonderfully for me so far, thank you for making such a great piece of software!
  • the Ooo plugin is multi-platform (there are separate word plugins for Mac and Word). A plugin compatible with FF 5 and 6 will be released shortly (the hope was to get it released in time for FF5's final release - not sure if they're still going to make that). I don't think FF7's features are known well enough to know for sure whether the plugin will stay compatible.

There is a new version as of half an hour ago.

For OpenOffice/LibreOffice, the changes shouldn't be so great. The other plugins need to be rebuilt with every release.
    3. Will the plugin continue to be called the "OpenOffice" integration plugin, or will it be renamed LibreOffice?
We don't have much of an opinion on naming, but it will continue to support both.
    4. Finally, and just out of curiosity, is the plugin multi-platform, or do separate versions of it need to be made for each OS?
The OpenOffice/LibreOffice plugin is multi-platform. The Mac and Windows Word plugins need to be recompiled for every new Firefox version and for different CPU types.
  • Sounds good. Thanks for the quick response! :)
  • Does zotero now work with ff5 also on Mac OSX 10.5 or does the same hold as for ff4 that it requires 10.6?
(It would probably make sense to indicate the answer here:
    http://www.zotero.org/support/word_processor_plugin_installation_for_zotero_2.1
since the information only relates to ff4.
    best
  • The Mac Word plug-in (or, more specifically, PythonExt) does not work with Firefox 4 or 5 on Mac OS X 10.5. (The rest of Zotero works fine, as does the OpenOffice.org plug-in.)
  • thanks for clarification! So this will continue forever? Same for ff6 etc I assume then...
  • That seems likely. We're not sure why PythonExt doesn't work on 10.5, but its primary maintainer doesn't have any interest in supporting this configuration, and it seems unlikely that future changes to either PythonExt or Firefox will get things to work again.
