Is it possible to organize items esoterically?

Sorry if this has been asked before. For classes I create subcollections with the semester's readings, but I can only organize by author, title, date, etc. Is there a way to enable me to organize them within the subcollection however I want, namely by week? One way I've tried is by using the "rights" column and numbering the items the way I want. However, this is unwieldy as the number sticks to the item no matter which collection it is in and I have to keep the rights column visible all the time.
