PDF is not imported

Dear Zotero,

I just installed Zotero to use for my scientific article library. When I would like to import a article from any scientific magazine online by clicking on the link (while the pdf link of the article is present on the screen), it does import the article pdf (although I have access to the article). I only get the bibliography info of the article in my library. Should I change some settings? What is wrong?

Thanks
Best
Noor
  • you need to have the "include pdf" box checked in the preferences, but more likely pdf download isn't supported from the site you're looking at - we'd need a link to confirm.
  • I recently switched to a macbook pro (OSX 10.6.7, snow leopard) and I am not able to import PDFs (I have the "include pdf" box checked), and the citation and page snapshot import normally.

Also, I have moved all of my PDFs from my PC, but cannot actually get them linked to the citations again. Though, since they are in a different location this may not be possible. Any ideas?
  • 1. are you sure those pages worked before? Not all translators automatically attach pdfs, even if the pdf is/seems available on that site

    2. I'm not sure I understand - if you used "link to file" then Zotero does look under the exact same file path - changing from a PC to a Mac that would break the links and you'd have to manually re-create each one. Files stored in Zotero move from one computer to the other - regardless of OS - without any problems if you follow the directions on copying your database.
  • 1. I have tried several different pages/journals, all of which worked on my PC.

    2. I believe the ones that are stored in zotero still work, but I have a lot more than are actually stored in zotero online storage, and those were in a firefox subfolder, so I moved that entire subfolder and now the links don't work (PDFs don't, page snapshots still do).
  • 1. samples? This is relatively unlikely.
    2. What exactly is the error message you get trying to open a pdf? Also, if items were in zotero online storage, they were stored within Zotero. And what _exactly_ did you do to move your data from computer A to computer B. Please provide as much details as possible.
  • 1. Wiley, SpringerLink, ScienceDirect (though there were known translator issues for a while), HighWire. I don't get a "known translator issues" message, it just simply doesn't import.

    2. I have found that the link that appears on the far right when you click on the PDF icon within will re-download the PDF, but if i double click on the PDF within the middle pane where all references are listed, i get a "file not found, the attached file may have been moved or deleted outside of zotero". If I can re-download the file, that will work.
  • 1. At least Wiley and Springer Link haven't imported pdfs for quite a while. Try JSTOR - you'll have to manually download one pdf first to OK the TOS, but then it should work.

    2. Well that's the link to file online, so that would work, sure. If you need the stored files back we'll need more details as described above.
  • 1. Ok - I was trying to get PDFs for articles that I knew had worked in the past. I guess I had just imported the Wiley and Springer Link PDFs a while ago. Is this a permanent thing, or is there a possible fox for Wiley and Springer Link? I did get a science direct article to work. I also switched networks at work so perhaps this has been a reason why I could not get any PDFs to import.

    2. The link to the file online will work. Thanks.
  • ah yes - if you don't have access to a pdf Zotero won't import it of course ;-) that's likely what happened with the network - Wiley isn't looking too good, no - there is no actual download link for a pdf on their site anymore, instead pdfs are embedded into a webpage, and don't have a persistent path - I think Springer might get fixed eventually, afaik the entire translator is broken and Zotero just uses the DOI on the page to look up the information.
