Zotero 2.1.6 is very slow and not updating citations

Hi Zotero people. Firstly thank you for making this great utility available.
I am in the final stages if writing my PhD and so this is fairly critical...
I upgraded to 2.1.6 last week and Firefox portable 4.0.1. I use word 2007. I upgraded as zotero seemed to have slowed down considerably and was hanging when moving from one reference in the library to another. Initially the upgrade seemed to sort this out. But it now doesn't update the word document with changes made to the zotero library. For example, I use APA style, and I was getting authors' initials coming up in my citations sometimes. I understand this is to do with disambiguation. But I have only one author with the surname "Koval" yet it insists on putting the initial in the citation. I definitely do not have any other Kovals. I tried changing the format of the initial in the library (i.e. from M. to M) but it keeps entering the original format even though it no longer exists in that format in the library!
Also I was trying to search for an author "Walker" and it brought up the search results from my previous search. No matter what I did it would not bring up all the results for Walker, just some of them. I restarted firefox and it searched correctly.
I am finding that the whole thing hangs when I try to insert a citation.
This is becoming both frustrating and worrying as I am meant to be submitting in 2 weeks but my citations are taking up way too much time!

It is also putting letters after some of the citations as if there are multiple identical papers with those authors on that date, where there aren't, just multiple instances on the same citation. This is an old document that I am updating, adding citation to it, might this be the reason?

Any suggestions?
Many thanks.
  • OK, three different issues:
    1. I can't help you with speed, someone else would have to step in, but it's not the first time I see this reported.
    2. The Koval initials are still most likely disambiguation: If you have just one Koval, but have him once as M, once as M. and once as Mark that would be three different authors from Zotero's perspective.
    3. The random letters are likely caused by a processor bug that's fixed in the upcoming Zotero version, which I hope will be released very soon - if it isn't released in time you can install the branch version and that should work.
  • Thanks for yur reply Adam.

I re-reinstalled the word plugin and the initials issue and the appended letter issue seem to have resolved. I understand about the different variations in first names and how that affects the citations. In this case there was only one author with one publication, so I still don't think disambiguation could have been the problem.
In addition to reintalling the word plugin, as the document was old, I also reinserted the old instance of that particular citation (Koval) and it seemed to get the message. I wondered if the issue might relate to updating of an old document, created with a previous version of Zotero..?
Anyway, happily at the moment I'm back in action, except for the speed. But i can live with that for the moment,

    Thanks again for your help.
