Remember last citation

Ubuntu 9.10
Firefox 4
OpenOffice 3.1
zotero 2.1.6

Dear zotero developers,

when summarizing a longer text, e.g. a chapter of a book, I come across the following problem:

Let's say the book I paraphrase is by "Smith". I insert a citation when I first mention the work by clicking on the 'Insert Citation' button in OpenOffice. I browse for the book among my hundreds of items, select Smith's book, add the page number, and click 'ok':

"The first argument is goes as follows: abc (Smith 1)."

Then I summarize some more and need to insert more references to the same work, although to different pages.

Again, i click 'Insert Citation.' Now I have to type in the author's name again each time I want to find the book. In my large library, this often takes a while. In each case, I add the page number and click 'ok':

"The second argument is goes as follows: def (Smith 5)."
"The third argument is goes as follow: ghi (Smith 8)."

After a while, this process becomes quite repetitive.

Now my idea is this: Wouldn't it be better if zotero remembered the last item I inserted a citation for? For instance, if I inserted a citation of (Smith 1), the next time I insert a citation, zotero would highlight Smith in my library and I would only have to add the correct page number--in my example '5' and '8.'

This behavior could either be implemented by default, or added as an option that the user may switch on and off.

Especially when you are summarizing texts and have to add a lot of references to different pages of the same work, this would improve the workflow.

Best regards, Ben
  • While these feature would still be nice, I thought for the benefit of others I should say there is a workaround if you are doing quite a few notes from the one source. Simply save a search for the item you're working on (right-click if it's in a group library) then navigate to that saved search. If, like me, you have a Word keyboard shortcut for insert citation, then you just use the citation, it's the only item in the list (although you still have to click it). It at least saves you from having to search each time.
