Recording document details for pdf files

After updating zotero, I can't automatically record all the relevant details for pdf files. The recording window does not give the option of Item type, author, publisher etc. - it mainly offers Filename and accessed date. Hence, can't create bibliography item from the information.
Is there an easy way round this?
Many thanks
Lotte
  • I think I found it by accident now, having looked for it for ages:
Hoghlight the pdf file in question, right click on the title bar (in the middle panel) and click on 'Retrieve Metadata' - voila!
    All the best

  • Oh, but it didn't really work, the information is wrong!
So, please, somebody out there, help!

  • Zotero uses Google scholar to retrieve metadata from pdf.
However, "the PDF identification is pretty unreliable for non-academic or non-article PDFs, since Google Scholar doesn't do much for them." (Avram's post on zotero-dev)
  • sometimes it gets the wrong pdfs - not much you can do - but you can change the info manually then.
  • Yes, but then you lose the date accessed (problem with updating existing downloads).
I have also created new item and then saved the pdf as a sub-file, but it is time consuming and a bit irritating, so was looking for an easy way round the problem.
    Thanks for your input, both!
