Report ID 321914471, report ID 543122814

Hello --

Lately, every time I use Zotero, I get the following message: "An error has occurred. Please restart Firefox." I'll do my best to report relevant information about the error, but I should add that I'm not technically knowledgeable about any aspect of Firefox or Zotero.

I am running Zotero 2.1.5 with Firefox 4.0 on Windows 7. I have only owned this computer for about a month, and when I bought it, I simply duplicated my main Firefox profile from the machine (a Windows XP box) that it was replacing.

The error usually appears not immediately on opening Zotero but after I have attempted several operations, such as searching or clicking on library items. It doesn't appear to be dependent on anything else I am doing in the browser at the same time.

My Zotero database is synced with my online account. The library has about 870 items. I have continued to use Zotero on two XP machines with almost the same Firefox setup and so far (knock on wood) haven't seen any errors there.

I have attempted uninstalling and reinstalling the add-on with no change in behavior.

In the process of writing this post, I attempted to open a Zotero library item one more time and got the same error again, which is why there are two report numbers in the header of this post. The little red exclamation-point icon next to the sync indicator also appeared this time (I haven't noticed whether this is consistent or not) with a tooltip indicating that "another sync process is already running."

Thank you for whatever guidance you can provide.

  • And another Report ID to add to the list: 427904314
  • You can temporarily disable auto-sync in the Sync pane of the Zotero preferences to make sure this isn't related to syncing.

If this isn't related to syncing, check your database integrity in the Advanced pane of the Zotero prefs. You might also want to try disabling your other Firefox extensions.
  • Thank you. Your hunch seems to be right. I disabled auto-sync and I haven't seen any problems yet.

What should I do now? Ideally I'd like to be able to keep auto-sync on most of the time.
  • One more detail ... I clicked the manual sync icon, let it run for about five minutes, and then closed the Zotero pane. When I reopened it, I saw the same error (Report ID 613592412).
  • Well, first, you're getting a sync error:
The file '[...]\CQ9CNVX4\[...].PDF' cannot be updated. Check that the file is not currently in use and that it is not marked read-only.

Restarting your computer or disabling security software may also help.
Right-click -> Properties on your Zotero data directory to make sure the Read-Only checkbox is empty, and make sure no PDFs are open and you're not using security software that's interfering.
  • But while you're getting this, a Debug ID for a sync attempt that reproduces this error would be helpful.
  • Here's the debug ID: D2083084876

Nothing in the data directory is read-only, as far as I can tell, I have no PDFs open, and the only security software I'm using is Microsoft Security Essentials.
  • I'm not sure what that's a Debug ID for, but I'm not seeing any errors (or sync attempts) in there.

Zotero can't access that file, and there's nothing it can do about that. You'll have to figure out why.
  • It's the Debug ID that appeared on my screen when I clicked the "Submit to Zotero servers" button. As I said, I don't have any technical understanding of Firefox or Zotero. Thanks.
  • Read the linked page. You need to start the debug logging before the action in question (in this case, syncing and the error) and stop and submit it afterward.
  • Sorry, I hadn't realized there was a linked page. I apologize for wasting your time.
