Conflict Resolution, Sync + "The file "....." cannot be updated"

At work I'm running Windows XP, Firefox 4, Zotero 2.1.5; at home Windows 7, Firefox 4, Zotero 2.1.5.
At work (not at home), since about two weeks I run into a recurring conflict resolution problem.
At irregular intervals, when using Firefox, I get conflict resolution messages; the number of items that need to be checked varies, but mostly it's 4 to 6.
After choosing which copies to keep, the red syncing failure button appears. On clicking that button invariably a dialogue window with the following message is displayed:
"The file ‘[filename] cannot be updated. Check that the file is not currently in use and that it is not marked read-only. Restarting your computer or disabling security software may also help."
When clicking on this window's "show file" button , the file seems to be OK, and is NOT in use, nor read-only. Each time the problem occurs, another file is mentioned being in use or being read-only.
Before this strange behavior occurs syncing seems to be working. However, the recurring need to address these conflict resolution problems is irritating.

So far I have tried the following:
- restart computer: problem returns
- rebuilt database: problem still there
- replaced my complete Zotero folder with a copy of my Zotero folder from home: problem still there

Any idea what I should do next?

    2) Select the 'zotero' directory itself, right-click, Properties, and make sure Read-Only is empty. If it already was, this is likely a problem with some security software you're running. In any case, this isn't an issue in Zotero itself and there's nothing Zotero can do about it—something on your system is preventing it from being able to update files.
