Group type error in group settings

I'm trying to change the group type from private to "Public, closed membership" -- in fact, I changed it earlier and it's somehow been changed back! -- and I get the error "Name not available. Error updating settings." What's happened?

    Private groups can be named whatever you want, public groups have names that can conflict with each other. In that case you need to change the name before you can change a group from private to public.
