issues with Ecological Society translators

Some (but not all) ESA journals get translated oddly,
with hyphens and extra junk ending up in the title field.
The first time this happened (second ref below) I thought
it had to do with a hyphen in the title, but the first
ref below has the same problem.

I got as far as looking at the code, but thought it would
take me many hours to learn enough to figure out how it
worked / fix it ...
