Using Word 2003 (on Windows XP) - and multiple windows of the same document open (for easier jumping between sections in that 100+ page thesis) - citations into Word footnotes do not end up in the active window but rather in the first/primary window (i.e. "name of document.doc:1"). Inserting citations into the main text, on the other hand, places them where they are supposed to go, i.e. in the active window.
