When exporting to Bibtex zotero puts ? instead of ø Report ID 161772692

After updating zotero (and I think firefox) some days ago bibtex is not exporting correctly the letter ø.
I am using zotero 2.1.1 in Ubuntu 10.10 with firefox 3.6.16. Bibtex was exporting my citations just fine before the update some days ago. Now, authors like Løyland are exported as L?yland. I have no problems with ä or å or accented vowels, just with ø.
I've tried to export in RIS and zotero exports ø correctly, it seems to be a problem with bibtex export.
  • This should be fixed in Zotero 2.1.2, which will be out shortly.
  • I just updated zotero to 2.1.2 and the problem is still there. Does anybody know if it can be fixed some other way? Thanks!

OK, we're aware of the issue here and will have it fixed within a couple days.
  • Thanks Dan!

This should be fixed in 2.1.4, available now.
  • I just updated zotero to 2.1.4, but unfortunately, the problem is still there.
  • Make sure you select "UTF-8" in the encoding menu when exporting to BibTeX.
  • I've selected UTF-8 under preferences-export, but it doesn't make a difference, the problem is still there and, as far as I can tell only with ø

You can only set the import character set in the preferences. To export as UTF-8 you need to enable the export character set option in that same pref pane and then select UTF-8 on export.

Thanks for the remark. I enabled the "Display character encoding option on export" but there is nothing new on the export window (e.g. right click on citation, select "Export selected item", a window opens but there is no export option). The ø is working fine with other export formats (like RIS), and it was working just fine before the update, in case it helps.
I've tried also to export to RIS format with the "Display character encoding option on export" and it does show a new drop-down menu with the character encoding option (and UTF-8 selected by default), it is just not there when you select the BibTex option.
  • It sounds like you have an old copy of the BibTeX translator. Try resetting translators in the Zotero preferences. If you have any custom site or other translators that you've manually edited or installed, you'll need to back them up first.
  • Fixed!
Thanks so much ajlyon and Dan!! It was making me nuts to see all those ? in the document.
