macword 2011: Report ID: 343928660 (and also 581386599 and 739722044)

Hi, (using word 2011 on OSX 10.6.7)

After switching from windows+zotero 2.(0.9 i think) to mac+zotero2.1.1+word plugin (3.1.1) i am unable now to use an old document and add citations as before.
Just try to add a citation and after 20-30 seconds a message pops out 'zotero experience an error updating your document...'

I did another test: just tried to open my old document (made in windows), set the document preferences, zotero says that my document will be upgraded. It appears to upgrade the document, or at least it asks me to choose the citation style.
I choose a citation style and the following error comes out after some seconds (report id 739722044):

I also tried to delete the bibliography and paste the contents of the document in a new document without success, or choose a different style.

After seeing another post, I tried to paste in applescript editor:

tell application "Microsoft Word" to name of active document

and it returns the name of my document

I also tried to paste in applescript editor (dont know if it makes sense):
tell application "Microsoft Word" to make new custom document property at active document with properties {name:"ZOTERO_PREF_1", value:"<data><session id=\"65lGMSdx\"/><style id=\"http://www.zotero.org/styles/mla\" hasBibliography=\"0\"/><prefs><pref name=\"fieldType\" value=\"Field\"/><pref name=\"noteType\" value=\"0\"/></prefs></data>"}

and it returns:

error "Microsoft Word got an error: Can’t make class custom document property." number -2710 from custom document property to class

Hope the error report is enough to understand what the problem is. If not, i can provide more details.

Thanks
  • Considering that i installed visual basic for applications, that essentially means there's nothing i can do?
The only big problem for me is that the document i can't use is my half-writen phd thesis... i have been quite happy with zotero until now, probably i should have chosen a payed product for more serious purposes..

    Regards

This is a bug in Word that affects a small proportion of users, and while we have tried our best to find a workaround, we have been unsuccessful. You can try completely removing Word and reinstalling, although I can't promise this will work. You can also install Word 2008, which doesn't have this bug. We are as frustrated with this as you are.
  • Hi, since it may help some users i got the document working now. Here's what i did:
I tried to paste small portions of my document (excluding the bibliography list) in a new document. In the end i generated the bibliography and it now appears to be working. I hope it continues like that. Took some time, but i'm glad it works.

Despite this, it takes about 25 seconds to add a new citation to the document (the document has 57000 words and 56 citations until now). It appears too much also my database is about 4.5mb (444 items), which is small i think.

    Thank you for the replies.

The majority of the overhead comes from Word for Mac, which becomes very slow at retrieving field codes with large documents. Unfortunately, there's not much we can do about this. One option would be to split up your document into separate parts, and then merge them together at the end.
