Report ID: 144682950 Word document upgrade error

Hi,

On trying to change the bibliography preferences on a Word 2007 document, Zotero first tries to upgrade the document. However it fails with the following error:

Access to C:\Users\alex\AppData\Local\Temp\ZOT4C4E.tmp was denied.

I've reported using Zotero's error reporting tool and this is the corresponing forum post.

I'm running Zotero 2.1 with Word plugin 3.1b1 on Firefox 3.6.16 on Windows7 (which is a guest OS on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS using VirtualBox OSE). Word is Office 2007 version.

Hopefully someone can help.
  • Does your user account have write access to C:\Users\alex\AppData\Local\Temp?
  • Thanks for the quick response.

I'd already enabled write access to the folder but it still generates the same error. I've also now updated to Firefox4 but still no joy. I'm also installing Office 2007 SP2 in case that makes a difference.

I'll post the results tomorrow when I try again.

    Thanks again
  • Do you have any security software installed? Zotero uses GetTempPath() to get the Windows temporary directory, and then tries to write a file there. This error is indicating that, for some reason, it can't write a file there. If all else fails, you could try changing the Windows temporary directory. (These instructions should work for Windows 7.)
  • Thanks Simon,

I think I've worked around it for now. The problem seems to be related to trying to change from "Fields" to "Bookmarks" (I was trying to convert the document so I could work on it in OpenOffice in Linux).

I found that closing Word and deleting the temporary files after converting the document stopped the error and it could be used as normal (in Word at least---saving it as ODT and opening in OpenOffice was ok but trying to edit the references produced errors, although changing document preferences seemed to be fine).

The error does re-appear if I converting between Fields and Bookmarks in either direction though. In any case I'm going to consider this resolved for my purposes as the Word version seems to be working so long as I don't try and change the reference format.

    Thanks again,
    Alex
