having to work older firefox-versions

universities are not the fastest to update their software. Thus I'm a stuck with an firefox 3.0.X here and would like to install zotero here (where to get an older, fitting version?)

and then i would like to synch the file-entries with my computer at home (newest firefox + newest zotero) - would it work?

    No -- Zotero requires a lot of things that Firefox 3.0.x doesn't provide.

    You should be able to use Zotero standalone -- it doesn't require that anything be installed on the computer you use it on.
