Incrementally numbered alpabetically sorted bibliography

Hi there,

It seems that making an incrementally numbered alphabetically sorted bibliography is not easy at all.

Every numbered and alphabetically sorted style in the repository has the entries in bibliography numbered in the order of appearance of the citation, so even if the author is listed on the first place in bibliography the number before it will not be 1 until it is not the first cited work.

It would need a citation-number independent variable.

If somebody has an idea on this issue I would gladly hear it.
  • How exactly are you generating your bibliographies? I've never seen a bibliography in which the numbers are not incremental.
  • Here is what i got

    [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [5] [6] [7] [1] [5]

  • this is the style in question
    http://forums.zotero.org/discussion/16595/style-for-neuroscience-letters/#Item_10
    it's a numerical style with
    <sort>
    <key macro="author"/>
    </sort>
    in the bibliography (which, per style guide, needs to be alphabetical).
    I wonder if taking out
    <sort>
    <key variable="citation-number"/>
    </sort>
    would change anything, but I wouldn't think so.

    I took out and even tried to replaced the
    sort
    key variable="citation-number"
    sort

    as it follows but does not seems to affect it in any way.

    citation
    sort
    key macro="author"
    key variable="title"
    sort
    option name="collapse" value="citation-number"
    layout prefix="[" suffix="]" delimiter=","
    <text variable="citation-number"
    layout
