Citations in Google Documents

Zotero's Microsoft Word plug-in appears delightful. I would like such functionality in Google Documents. I know about the functionality that currently exists, in which one can drag a reference, or multiple references, right into the Google Documents window. However I do not see support for citing while writing the text. I suspect that this capability may have more to do with Google Documents development than Zotero development. Am I correct?

    Yes, you are correct. I think the GD team will need to add support for this kind extensibility.
