Add a pane for PDF files management

Hi,
I have been using zotero and find it a very useful application.
What I miss now is an easy interface to add a pdf file to a reference.
In this moment I open my PDF directory in firefox and then drag and drop files
to the references. However I have many files and the horizontal split in not really
nice.
It might be useful to add the possibility to navigate through files with a new vertical pane, and of course with drag and drop possibility.

  • I'm not sure if this solves your problem or not, but, in Windows at least, you can use Firefox as a file browser. Type e.g.

    file:///Some Drive/Some Directory

into the navigation bar you can then see your pdf or whatever files are in the directory which you can then drag onto your references.
I'll admit I only thought of doing this recently, previously mucking about with a separate explorer pane and Firefox was a nuisance. I've found myself using Zotero's own storage ability more and more though for portability and other reasons.

  • Management of panes and sidebars is something which we are working on in a future version of Zotero. See http://forums.zotero.org/discussion/222/sidebar/

Right now you can attach a PDF to any reference as either a snapshot from within the browser, or as an attachment by browsing your file system.

As Jon mentions, you can also navigate your file system in Firefox at file:// and find your PDFs and just drag them into your references in Zotero.
  • If navigating the file system with Firefox seems a useful alternative for you, it might make things even easier if you add a bookmark for your PDF folder to your Firefox bookmarks.

You can use such a bookmark to open the PDF folder, and then if you leave the folder open in a tab, you can drag and drop PDFs from the list directly onto Zotero entries with no navigation needed.
