Zotero not grabbing URLs

For some unknown reason, Zotero (v.1.0.1) has stopped grabbing URLs when I click the icon next to the URL to capture a citation. This seems to happen for all journals I've visited (Nature, Science, Nucleic Acids Research, etc.) Thus, the "View" button is not enabled, whereas it used to take me to the page location for the abstract when I had obtained the citation from the journal's abstract page. I can manually copy-paste the URLs into the URL field but this is tedious.

Zotero reports there are errors in the database. I used the database repair tool and it still reports errors. I removed the zotero directory giving zotero a fresh start and without any input on my part, it still reports errors. I uninstalled the Zotero extension, wiped the zotero directory, and re-installed the Zotero extension and I still have the same problems (database errors reported and no URL capture).

The only things that have changed between last week and this week are my location and decreased bandwidth in my connection.

I appreciate any help on this.
  • I confirmed that an installation of Zotero 1.0.1 on a Windows box also failed to grab the URL and place it in the record information.
  • I am back at my previous location and this behavior persists. I have also confirmed on two independent machines (both Ubuntu GNU/Linux boxes) that this bug exists.

Because this bug seems to be platform independent, I think the database bug is unrelated. (The Windows box did not report database errors, and the Ubuntu boxes all report errors upon fresh installation).
  • Hi,
I've got an Ubuntu installation here that's working fine with Zotero. Can you post an URL of a specific site that doesn't work so that I can see if I can reproduce what you're experiencing? Also, can you grab the following URL, which works fine for me?:
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_pictures/7113039.stm
  • Okay, the news.bbc.co.uk address worked for me, but it doesn't seem to work for all major science journal sites I have tried. Here are a couple:

    http://nar.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/abstract/33/suppl_1/D476
    http://bioinformatics.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/abstract/22/14/e9
    http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/abstract/318/5854/1302
    http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/vaop/ncurrent/abs/nature06222.html
    http://www.pnas.org/cgi/content/abstract/104/47/18718

    Thanks,
    Chris
  • This problem should now be fixed. Your Zotero translators will update automatically within 24 hours, or you can click "Update now" in Zotero preferences.
  • I am still having this problem even after 'update now' in the preferences. No urls are saved when clicking the icon.

The site (amongst others) that does not work is:

    http://uhmanoa.lib.hawaii.edu/

That's a library catalog—it's not supposed to save a URL. If you've set up OpenURL correctly in the Zotero prefs, you can use the Locate button to get back to the record page in your library catalog.
  • I am having a similar problem.

Zotero has never been able to communicate with my library catalogue (Carleton University), but before the last update (1.0.1) it used to work with the databases and journals that I accessed through my library. Now, I can't get the data from anything.

In both cases, the icon appears in the URL bar, but when I click on it, I get the "error check known translator issues" response.

Example URL from Carleton's catalogue: http://catalogue.library.carleton.ca/search?/awells+h+g/awells+h+g/1%2C3%2C212%2CB/exact&FF=awells+h+g+herbert+george+1866+1946&1%2C209%2C/indexsort=-

Example URL from MLA International Bibliography:
    http://catalogue.library.carleton.ca/search/.b2027621/.b2027621/1%2C1%2C1%2CB/l856~b2027621&FF=&1%2C0%2C%2C1%2C0

I don't know what kind of proxy my library uses, but I can find out from them if that would be helpful. I hope this problem can be resolved because it seriously impedes the usefulness of Zotero (which is the best thing ever!).
