Problems with "Add Item by Identifier" using ISSN

Hi,

I Have a problem with Zotero using the "Add Item by Identifier". E.g. I¨m having this article by Porter called "How information gives you competitive advantage." According to the article, the ISSN-number is 0017-8012, but if I write this in the "Add Item by Identifier", it will add an article named "Effect of diazepam on the electroencephalographic pattern and vigilance of unanaesthetized and curarized rats with a chronic cobalt-gelatin focus". I had this problem with other articles as well: Zotero gives me the wrong article!
I've tried with ISBN, and that works just fine.

Hope someone can help.

  • An ISSN refers to a journal, not to a specific article. The Add Item by Identifier function doesn't handle ISSNs, since Zotero doesn't have a type for journals (as opposed to journal articles).

For journal articles, you'll want to use a PubMed ID (PMID) or a DOI.

Your ISSN is being interpreted as the PubMed ID 178012, which is the article you mention about poisoned rats.
  • Thanks for your help!

I don't know why, but I thought it could handle ISSN as well. (And I thought ISSN was an ID for journal articles, so I was completely wrong).

So if I can't find a PMID or a DOI, I just have to type it in myself? I am, as you clearly see, no Zotero-expert, so if there's any other way to do it I haven't found out (yet).
  • if you can't find a pmid or DOI, the fastest way is usually to use google scholar and get the data from there (or the site it links to - dedicated databases - JSTOR, EBSCO, the journal's publisher etc. - almost always have better and more reliable data than google scholar.)
