How do I eliminate the default period and commas when I do not use certain fields in a citation

#1. I am writing my Master's Thesis. I cannot have errors in the Bibliography. There are default periods and commas when I do not use the author or other fields. I have multiple sources from legislative and government sources. These do not have authors. If I do not use a field, it should NOT place a period or comma in the space instead.

#2.The date is never in correct order. It needs to be Month, day, year. Yet it always defaults to year, month and day. This is not acceptable. In the United States we do NOT change the date format. It is always Month, Day, Year. It is NEVER any other format.

#3. Within the text I only want author, date, or just date, to be in the text. However, the page numbers always show when I put them in. I want the page numbers only in the Bibliography, not the in text reference. It doesn't matter what style I choose, these errors ALWAYS appear. This is completely NON-USER friendly for a Master's Thesis.

#4. When I place the number of pages in the pages field it should read pp when I put in a number larger than 1.

#5. When I use MLA it double-spaces by default between entries. NO Bibilography is ever double-spaced between entries.

#6. The word "Print" shows up in my Bibliography entry. This is not within the references. This MUST be embedded in the program. I cannot delete these errors by hand. I have three pages of Bibliography and I'm just starting.

How do I fix these problems?

  • Which version of Zotero are you using?
  • Are all of these behaviors with the standard MLA style selected?

Others may be able to give feedback on other issues here, but #6 is simply an MLA requirement in the most recent revision of the MLA style guide. I believe there is a style for the previous version in the style repository: http://www.zotero.org/styles .
  • this is an unnecessarily hostile post - I suggest if you want people to help you you don't yell at them.
    1. Is hard to do at times - it also depends on the style - some solve that better than others. Without more specific examples it's hard to say anything more.
    2. is nonsense. The way dates are displayed vary from style to style. The idea that there is one correct way for the US is mistaken.
    3. the page numbers you put in in the plugin refer to "pointers", i.e. the specific page of pages a citation is refering to - those should, according to all common author-date styles, be in the citation. The page range for articles should be entered in the Zotero database and will only display in the bibliography
    4. again, that depends on the style. All types of requirements exist. We need to know which style you're using and what you're seeing.
    5. Spacing is a bit tricky with Zotero. MLA should be double-spaced throughout, but not have extra spacing between - I'll see if that can be fixed.
    6. see ajlyon above.
