Chicago Style Author-Date not putting last name, first name

Hi,
I am exporting a bibliography from Zotero in Chicago Author-Date Style. When I export it to an .rtf file, it gives me a listing with the author's first name and then last name, instead of last name, first name. Like this: Ariela Lowenstein. 2004. Gerontology coming of age: the transformation of social gerontolgoy into a distinct academic discipline. Educational Gerontology 30: 129-141.

I tried going to the Zotero STyle Repository http://www.zotero.org/styles and installing the style form again. When I mouse over the style on that page, the examples it gives are correct. (in the example above, it would be Lowenstein, Ariela) I clicked Install, but it is still giving me firstname lastname format.

Do I have to modify the code somehow to get it to format the author names correctly and if so, what modifications do I make?
  • is that limited to the Chicago style? Try the same citation in a different style - e.g. APA or American Political Science. If they are also wrong (i.e. first name first), the problem is your data and not the style
  • RESOLVED! You need to change the "field mode" setting next to the author's name in your Zotoro entry's Info tab. [this button looks like a tiny rectangle next to the + and - signs] This will parse the "name" field into two parts allowing the program to separate the last name and first name in generating the bibliography.

    See: https://www.zotero.org/support/kb/name_parsing
  • @echewter I was having a meltdown trying to figure out if I was acutally looking at an accurate style guide, or Zotero was somehow wrong. This saved the day. Has probably messed up many a other reference lists haha
