deleted items, but they stay in sqlite

I recently unchecked my "Sync automatically" button so that I could use Zotero to download a large amount of material.

I have since deleted all of these items from "My Library" so that I can continue to use the Syncing feature, but my sqlite file still seems to have these entries because I'm getting an error message: "Databases of this size cannot yet be synced" Error ID: f7bf93c2

I've only got a couple hundred entries left in my Zotero folder with some fairly small text notes, so there shouldn't be an issue and I can only presume it's the files I have tried to delete that are causing the problem.

Is there a way to solve this?

I've seen multiple threads of people that miss the fact that their trash is full. Any chance of reviving the idea of adding an item number count to each library/collection name (http://forums.zotero.org/discussion/1218/item-count-in-collections/?Focus=4872#Comment_4872)? E.g.

My Library (433)
  Research (12)
  Trash (421)
